Quick answer

Debt is paid off when your combined monthly payment (regular plus extra) outpaces the monthly interest on the balance. With the default inputs (Total debt $24,000, Annual rate 18%, Monthly payment $700, Extra payment $100) the result is Payoff time 3y 5m, Estimated interest $8,124, Monthly payoff $800.

Method

Total payment = monthly payment + extra payment. Each month interest of (annual rate / 100 / 12) x balance is added and the total payment is subtracted, until the balance reaches zero.

If the total payment is not larger than the first month of interest, the balance never falls and the payoff time shows 1200+ months.

Worked example

Total debt$24,000
Annual rate18%
Monthly payment$700
Extra payment$100
Payoff time3y 5m
Estimated interest$8,124
Monthly payoff$800

Assumptions and limits

  • Your debts are modelled as one combined balance at one average rate. The calculator does not order several debts from smallest to largest, so it estimates the payoff time rather than a full snowball schedule.
  • Fees, rate changes and new borrowing are not modelled.

FAQ

How long will it take to pay off my debt?

It depends on the balance, rate and total monthly payment. With the defaults ($24,000 at 18%% paying $700 plus $100 extra) the payoff time is 3y 5m.

How much interest will I pay?

The calculator adds the interest charged each month until payoff. With the defaults it is $8,124.

Why does the payoff time show 1200+ months?

The total monthly payment is not larger than the monthly interest, so the balance does not decline. Increase the payment.

Is this a true debt snowball?

It models a single combined balance at one rate. A full snowball clears the smallest balance first and rolls its payment into the next, which this tool does not simulate.

Is my data stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and the inputs are not sent to or saved by this site.
